On the founder, the name, the silk, and why these caps exist.

A note from our founder

I've always been a tomboy. Caps have always been part of my look. But for years, I lived with what I started calling 'cap guilt.' They looked good. They completed an outfit. But I knew what they were doing underneath - flattening my hair, irritating my skin, and affecting my hair health... something I've always been conscious of. If I wore makeup, I had to carry it with me everywhere. I wouldn't take my cap off, just to avoid dealing with the dreaded 'hat hair' or makeup smudges that had accumulated throughout the day.

I found myself scheduling my cap days and began to feel crazy.

Caps can be powerful. They frame your face. They elevate your look. They create a sense of mystery. They protect you from the rain or shine. They transform an outfit instantly, or let you go completely incognito.

So I created caps lined with silk. To minimise friction, protect your hair, and reduce breakage and shedding - to give you back the confidence a cap should enhance. A cap can be whatever you want it to be. But it shouldn't come at the cost of your hair health.

And that's how Sero Silks was born.

Behind the name

Sero means to sow in Latin. To plant something good, let it grow and take its time.

I always knew I'd build something of my own - but it was never the right moment. Before I could build Sero, I had to nurture and 'water' myself first - slowly but surely - until I grew into who I am today. So I wanted a brand that carried patience, growth, and had a real reason to exist. Something that solved a problem, and could put a smile on people's faces.

People ask why the horse is running if the name is about patience. Because fast was never the point - a gallop is just what years of quiet work eventually look like. And mid-stride, for a single second, a horse leaves the ground completely. It's powerful, and open enough to hold your own story too.

Why silk, against the hair

Most caps are lined with cotton or polyester, hiding behind words such as 'satin' or 'satin lined'. These materials have a surface that rubs and pulls on hair strands. Every time the cap moves - and a cap moves all day - that surface drags against your hair, roughing up the cuticle, snapping fragile strands and drawing out moisture. Cotton in particular absorbs; it takes the natural oils your hair needs and retains these oils in cap linings.

Silk charmeuse does close to the opposite. It is one of the smoothest surfaces you can put fabric-to-hair, so friction drops instead of building. It absorbs far less moisture, so your hair keeps its own. We chose a 19-momme weight for the interior deliberately - substantial enough to feel like something, light enough to breathe. That is the entire idea of Sero: the cap you see is cotton twill, but everything that touches you is silk.

There is a group of people I did in fact have in mind when I started, and now think about more often than not: people losing their hair - through chemotherapy, alopecia, or any cause really. A cap conceals patchiness or balding without announcing a thing, and for a scalp that has become tender, or for fine new growth that deserves gentleness, an ordinary rough lining is the last thing you want against your head. Silk simply asks less of fragile hair and sensitive skin.

Someone very dear to me was going through exactly this. I gave him one of our caps, and he thanked me and gave me a feeling  I can't quite put into words expect - he said it was the first cap that actually felt soothing on his head. That feedback gave me chills, the good type and felt better than any sale ever could. 

Sero is not a medical product, and we would never claim to be one. It is simply a softer way to wear the cap you were going to wear anyway.
